BSN Progression AND Retention Policy

Progression and retention in the College of Nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program are contingent upon a student’s ability to meet established academic standards and maintain compliance with all health, security, and CPR certification requirements. Students must satisfy the following requirements to remain in good standing and progress through the nursing program:

1. Academic Performance Successful completion of all nursing courses is defined as earning a grade of C+ or higher or a grade of Satisfactory (S), as applicable.
2. Freshman Direct Admit Students
   Freshman Direct Admit students who are unable to progress in the program following the first summer term (the third semester of the first academic year) will be dismissed from the BSN program.
3. Student Success Plans
   Students who have a grade below 77% in a course exam, a cumulative quiz grade, or a cumulative course grade will be placed on a student success plan, per the Student Success Initiative.
4. Course Repetition
   Students who earn a grade of C or below or an Unsatisfactory (U) in a nursing course may repeat the course one time only, subject to space availability.
5. Repeated Failure of the Same Course
   Students who earn a grade of C or below or an Unsatisfactory (U) in the same nursing course for a second time will be dismissed from the nursing major.
6. Failure in Two Nursing Courses
   Students who earn a grade of C or below or an Unsatisfactory (U) in any two nursing courses will be dismissed from the nursing major.
7. Withdrawal from a Nursing Course
   Any fully admitted pre-licensure BSN student who withdraws from a nursing course, except through an approved exceptional-circumstances withdrawal process, will be considered out of sequence with their cohort and will lose their seat in the cohort which can have financial aid implications.
8. Reentry Following Leave of Absence
   Students returning from a leave of absence to the BSN program will be required to meet the curriculum requirements in effect at the time of reentry. Based on an assessment of clinical skill competency, completion of an independent study course may be required. Placement in clinical courses is contingent upon the availability of clinical sites and space.
9. Professional Conduct and Ethical Standards
   Students must adhere to the standards of conduct outlined in the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics, the Florida Nurse Practice Act (Section 464.018, Florida Statutes), and 91ÖÆƬ³§ Regulation 4.001, Code of Academic Integrity. Students are expected to demonstrate professional conduct consistent with the College of Nursing’s philosophy, conceptual framework, and Professional Statement. Failure to meet these standards may result in dismissal from the program.
10. Clinical Safety and Professional Judgment
    Students must demonstrate safe clinical practice and appropriate professional judgment consistent with the expectations of beginning-level nursing practitioners. A student who exhibits unsafe behavior in a clinical setting may be removed immediately from the clinical experience if a faculty member determines that the student poses a significant risk to patient safety. Students removed from a clinical course for patient safety reasons will receive a grade of F in the course.
11. Health, Compliance, and Security Requirements
    Prior to participating in any clinical experience, students must provide documentation demonstrating compliance with all College of Nursing and clinical agency requirements, including, but not limited to:
    1. Level II background screening and fingerprinting;
    2. Drug screening;
    3. Required immunizations and health documentation;
    4. Clinical agency security requirements; and
    5. Current CPR certification.

Failure to maintain compliance with these requirements may result in the inability to participate in clinical activities and may affect progression in the nursing program.
